R&D Projects in Çamlı

R&D Projects in Çamlı

"Project" word is harped on the same string in every field of life. Every work, investment to be done and application and change to be made is actually a project. There has seen a significant increase in public support based on making R&D studies for progress as one of the dynamos of businesses in recent years in our country. This has given a great impetus for particularly small and medium-sized businesses as being research and development support programs known as the 6th framework and which is continued today as Horizon 2020 in the European Union. In short, innovation will shape the future of countries and businesses.

We as Çamlı are trying to provide contributions to our business through the projects which we have implemented and plan to implement and for which we have made applications. However, unfortunately the majority of projects, though being a source of pride for us, belong to the seafood business. I would like to mention the last of R & D projects of Pına Deniz in this article;

“Implementation of Multitrophic Approach in Aquaculture (Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture, IMTA); Investigation of monitoring and reducing the environmental impact of fish farms''

If we explain it; Multitrophic in Aquaculture is to implement co-aquaculture approaches (of culture types with different feeding patterns and levels) (such as; fish-mussel aquaculture, fish - sponge breeding, fish - macroalgae aquaculture). It may be possible in this type of aquaculture to ensure breeding of different species in the same system by conversion of all wastes (organic and inorganic) caused to the environment to the biomass and to make contribution to the economy by obtaining products with no input and also to reduce possible wastes discharged to the environment.

What we will do in our project; macroalgae (like Ulva sp.) proliferating by using inorganic nutrients in seawater and sea cucumber (Holotury sp) species evolving by using organic wastes to be possibly settled to the sea floor will be produced by placing in different areas by means of analyzing the discharge rate, climatic conditions, chemical properties of water in sea water bodies where fish is raised.

Who we will do it through; we will be collaborating along with the universities and research organizations which are the experts of this matter and the competent authorities of the state (Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Environment, Institute of Marine Sciences of Dokuz Eylül University) in designing such an innovative system. WE as Çamlı Yem ve Besicilik have to be of course added as home player of the project.

Process was initiated, we measured currents, we put our cages, we made our first sampling of the water and now it is time to the establishment of other systems; macroalgae and shellfish aquaculture systems...

It will also be possible from the first phase of the studies till the end of the project to visually monitor the project with images of underwater and surface.

Figure 1:  Schematized form of IMTA system

Advantages of the project;

  1. Scientific results will be revealed that environmental impacts of aquaculture may be reduced by multitrophic approach. It can be used as an argument in public disclosure and overcoming the negative approaches to fish farms.
  2. We'll try to be able to produce Macroalgae, crustaceans and sea cucumber without need to any input. These are used such a wide field of business from cosmetics to food industry, chemical industry to aquaculture!
  3. R & D is a culture and ÇAMLI has already placed this culture in its infrastructure, such that new developments are waiting us! We have taken our place amongst the firms engaged in R & D, managing and finalizing projects successfully and we will proceed further.
  4. The contributions to be received from TUBİTAK will also support the infrastructure of laboratory and equipment in our business and of course will pave the way to more large-scale projects.

We have a long way to go..

Çamlı is not a SME, with 40% of core support. We must be able to receive additional support. To do this, we need some structural changes, as well.  The criteria required to get support more than 40% is listed as follows;

1.  If 30% of expenditure is personnel expenses (the amount of additional support 75% - 32% x staff costs)

2.  If 5% of personnel expenses is related to staff with PhD

3.  If business is buying R & D services from universities in relation to 20% of its units

4.  If the advanced materials to project topic are in the field of technology

5.  If the proportion of annual revenue which business has obtained from the sale of the original products in total sales revenue is less than 25%,

Additionally it is possible to get supports up to 25%. We were able to get support of 51% in my most recent project. To get more than that, we would have taken a great way even if we could recognize only R & D expenses in a separate account.

Our goals are great! While the projects in Turkey are carrying on, I believe that it will be perfect for particularly Yaşar Holding and Çamlı to take part in the projects presented in the international arena. Presently, we have an internationally participated application made to Eurostar program, if it is supported, who knows maybe I write about this matter in the next blog post.
